Recent data released by the Department for Transport confirms that there were 2.43 million goods vehicles travelling from Great Britain to mainland Europe in 2012. This is a 1.7% decline from 2011 and 16% lower than 2007.
However, looking at a wider picture, the number of goods vehicles travelling to mainland Europe from Great Britain has increased by almost 75% in the last 20 years. What is of interest is that over that period there has been a steady increase in the number of foreign registered vehicles travelling from GB to mainland Europe: they has risen from 0.39 million in 1992 to almost 1.5 million in 2012
In the last quarter of 2012, UK registered vehicle accounted for less than 20% of all powered vehicles travelling to mainland Europe and these figures were down on the same period the previous year.
