The Department for Transport (DfT) has launched a new consultation, published 1 July 2026, focused on improving how local bus service information is collected, shared and accessed across England. The consultation closes on 23 September 2026.
What’s being proposed?
At the heart of the consultation is a move to fully digitise the lifecycle of local bus services. This includes:
- Registration
- Variations
- Cancellations
The DfT is also exploring new powers to:
- Require more standardised data from operators and local authorities
- Enable the collection and publication of richer service data
- Create a single, open, digital source of truth for bus information
Reason for consultation
The aim is to make bus service information:
- Easier to submit (for operators)
- More consistent and transparent
- More accessible to the public, developers and authorities
Rather than requiring a brand new system, the proposals would integrate with the existing Bus Open Data Service (BODS), building on current digital foundations.
