A motorist who knocked down and killed a cyclist while he was eating at the wheel has been cleared of causing death by dangerous driving.
The driver struck a cyclist near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in May 2012, has yet to be sentenced. The driver admitted he had been eating a sandwich between five and 10 seconds before he hit him but stated that his eyes were on the road at the time.
He admitted causing death by careless driving but denied driving dangerously. The jury decided that the facts amounted to careless driving as opposed to dangerous.
Drivers should consider what they are doing when behind the wheel and the fact a momentary lapse in concentration, whatever the cause, can have catastrophic consequences.
