The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is introducing new methods for loading HGVs and trailers for brake testing.
This change aims to save time and reduce costs for operators while also potentially reducing environmental impact.
From 21 August 2025, the DVSA has approved load simulation brake rollers for annual testing.
As a result, vehicles may not be required to be loaded before being presented for testing.
It is worth noting that vehicles which are currently exempt from laden brake testing will still be exempt from the new requirements.
However, it is considered best practice to test vehicles even if an exemption applies.
This option is expected to be particularly beneficial for vehicles that are difficult or costly to load for testing, as it provides an alternative method for brake testing.
The DVSA review of new technology will continue in the future, and any updates to the existing guidelines will be provided accordingly.
