Vehicle operator licensing: moving away from paper

Earlier this year Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain and the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland announced from 1 August 2022, they would no longer be accepting paper applications for new licences, and for significant changes to existing licences.

Paper applications can sometimes be submitted using old, outdated forms, so instead operators are urged to use the online Vehicle Operator Licensing (‘VOL’) system to make significant changes such as renewing a licence, surrendering a licence, applying for a licence etc. Submitting applications electronically is also faster.

An application checker has also been introduced which enables the applicant to see what they need to complete and how to complete it correctly. Completing applications fully and correctly means applications can be dealt with in a timely manner.

To register now or make changes to your licence visit www.vehicle-operator-licensing.service.gov.uk. If you are unable to use the digital service, you can seek help by contacting the Customer Service Centre on 0300 123 9000 (for GB) and for Northern Ireland by contacting 0300 200 7831.
