U-Turn on Plans to Drop Cabotage Restrictions

The European Commission has announced that it no longer plans to remove all cabotage restrictions in 2014 because concerns were raised over it being complex and disruptive.
The current rules limit international hauliers to 3 journeys within a 7 day period.  Siim Kallas, the vice-president of the EC, has stated that he believes that cabotage rules must evolve over the long term.  However, Operators should be in no doubt that the EC wishes to see restriction free transport in the future and it will be striving towards that aim.
In other cabotage news, the Department for Transport has relaxed cabotage restrictions from September to reduce the problem with new number plate peaks in car buying in March and September.
