The EU proposals for harmonising roadworthiness tests, roadside inspections and vehicle documentation (“the Roadworthiness Package”) have been adopted by the European Parliament’s Transport Committee.
As the UK already operates to these standards, the proposals will not change much in the UK. Instead they will simply bring the rest of Europe (particularly Eastern Europe) into line. The main objective of the new proposal is to provide for a risk-rating system aimed at focusing inspections on vehicles operated by undertakings with poor safety records.
On 2 July 2013, the European Transport Committee endorsed the proposals and the legislation is expected to be adopted before the end of 2013.
